Physiotherapy for Knee Pain in Didsbury, Manchester
Knee pain can affect walking, stairs, work, exercise and confidence in movement. Physiotherapy can assess relevant contributing factors and support an individual rehabilitation plan.
Overview
Knee pain may develop suddenly or gradually and can affect walking, stairs, squatting, kneeling, work or exercise. The same activity can be difficult for different reasons, so assessment focuses on the individual presentation.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include pain at the front, side or back of the knee, stiffness, swelling, reduced confidence when loading the leg, clicking or difficulty bending and straightening. These features do not identify a diagnosis on their own.
Causes
Knee pain can be associated with a recent injury, a change in activity or loading, irritation of joints or surrounding tissues, reduced strength, previous problems or age-related changes. Sometimes several factors contribute.
Assessment
A physiotherapy assessment may review symptom behaviour, swelling, movement, strength, balance, walking and the demands of relevant daily or recreational activities. Findings are considered alongside your history and goals.
How we help
Rehabilitation may involve appropriate movement, progressive strengthening, advice on managing load and support with returning to valued activities. Further investigation or onward referral may be recommended when the assessment indicates it is appropriate.
When to seek medical advice
Seek prompt medical advice after significant trauma, if the knee is visibly deformed, hot and markedly swollen, if you cannot bear weight, or if symptoms are accompanied by fever or acute illness.
