Therapy for OCD in Didsbury, Manchester
OCD can involve intrusive thoughts, images or urges alongside compulsions, checking, reassurance seeking or avoidance that become difficult to manage.
Overview
Obsessive-compulsive disorder can involve intrusive thoughts, images or urges and repeated actions or mental rituals intended to reduce distress or prevent feared outcomes.
Symptoms
Common patterns include checking, cleaning, repeating, ordering, mental reviewing, reassurance seeking or avoidance. Intrusive thoughts can feel inconsistent with a person’s values and are not the same as intentions.
Causes
OCD is influenced by a combination of factors. Attempts to gain certainty or neutralise distress can bring short-term relief while unintentionally strengthening the cycle over time.
Assessment
Assessment explores obsessions, compulsions, avoidance, reassurance and the effect on daily life. It also considers whether another difficulty may better explain some experiences.
How we help
CBT for OCD may include exposure and response prevention, introduced collaboratively and progressed carefully. The aim is not to force exposure, but to help change the relationship with uncertainty and compulsive responses.
When to seek medical advice
If you feel at immediate risk of harming yourself or someone else, or cannot keep yourself safe, seek urgent help through emergency services or an appropriate crisis service. This website is not an emergency service.
